A recent report from the GRHC announced that the green roof industry grew 115% over the course of 2011, a significant rise from the 28.5% growth in 2010. Among the reasons listed for the aggressive jump is the number of Green Roof Professionals driving sales across the country. The GRHC announced that there are over 500 currently out in the field. We at Greensulate are happy to represent 1% of them!
Another for the growth is the passing of pro-green-roof legislation which has increased substantially over the last year. We’ve reported before about the green roof legislation in NYC, and many other cities are following suit. The growth leader in Metropolitan Areas was Washington DC with more than 800,000 sf installed in 2011. Mayor Vincent Gray says he is committed to maintaining first place next year as well.
The undisputed leader however remains Chicago with over 5 million square feet of green roofs installed over the last decade. With many American cities following in Chicago’s footsteps, this growth can only continue!
